The Lost Angels series, book four: Warrior’s Angel

From Warrior’s Angel, coming this summer, 2014

Rhiannon stopped when she reached the next alley, whipped around the corner, and hit the adjacent wall with a numb thud. Her body slid to the ground between a dumpster and a pile of empty cardboard boxes to rest against the cold, hard bricks. Her heart beat bruisingly against the inside of her ribs, pounding out an erratic, maniacal rhythm of fear. Her breaths were coming hard and fast, but she struggled with the need to control them, forcing them to quiet. Her life could depend upon it.
The effort to still her breathing caused her pulse to quicken even further, and began a terrible pressure behind her eyes. She covered her face with her hands, hoping to drown out any sounds he might be making. And there, under the cover of shadow and night, hidden from the street and headlights of passing cars, she shook uncontrollably and wondered how the hell it had come to this.
She squeezed her eyes shut against the pain riding up her left leg, where four even gashes had been carved into her thigh. She needed to heal the wound. She could feel some sort of poison from it seeping into her bloodstream and moving already through her system. But she’d used up so much of her power, so much of her strength just trying to hide her presence and then get away with her life. And she had no idea how much more of it she would need before the night was out.
Her memories of the night were twisted and chaotic, and she didn’t have time to unwind them before she heard her pursuers coming for her. Their wings made a terrible flapping sound against the wind, and she could see them in her mind’s eye. They were massive and colored like stone.
‘I’m going to die tonight,’ she thought. She crouched a little lower in the alley where she hid and looked up toward the space of night that stretched between the two buildings on either side. A few faint stars peeked through the blanket of pollution and darkness, and a distant jet plane blinked red and white across the carpet of black. But there was no other light, no other movement.
The flapping sound stopped – and Rhiannon held her breath.
“She’s nearby,” came a man’s voice high overhead.
“I sense nothing.” A second voice. This one a little older.
Her eyes widened. They were on top of the buildings, somewhere fifteen to twenty stories up, and searching for her. She had never been so grateful for the black clothing she always wore as she was now.
“I managed to mark her before she escaped. I can feel her… somewhere….”
“You’d better be right. She’s seen us,” said voice number two. “We can’t let her go.”

The Seelie King – Available Now

The Seelie King: Book five in the Big Bad Wolf spinoff series, The Kings.

Tuath Stories remembered the fates of the Wishers well.
Thousands of years ago, the sovereigns of the Fae lands issued a decree: The Wishers would die. Powerful magics were called forth, and in an act never before or since accomplished, both light and dark, both Seelie and Unseelie gathered together in their courts and combined their powers. The Wishers were annihilated.
However… legends told how the strongest and most fortunate few managed to escape and hide themselves amongst humans in the mortal realm.
But thousands of years passed with no sign of these legendary Wishers.
They were declared extinct.
And in its rareness, in its extinctness, the lost, most powerful class of the fae, in fact became sacred.

There are a lot of things Selene Trystaine would change about the world if she could. Injustices press in, apathy reigns, and unkindness seems to have taken hold in the crevices of humanity. So when she learns that she is not who she has always believed herself to be and destiny presents her with her birthright, she must battle with her inner demons, even while the handsome and powerful king of those who’d once attempted to destroy her kind discovers her – and begins an all-out attack of seduction on her senses.

No one knows Avery’s true name. He’s the king of the Seelie Fae, a powerful and ancient man who has ruled a beautiful and dangerous world in solitude for longer than human history has been recorded. And he has no reason to believe this solitude will ever change…. Until the other sovereigns of the thirteen kingdoms begin finding their queens one after another. And suddenly, on a hot Spring day, Selene Trystaine appears beside the river Thames like a mirage made real.

A fiery soul, a gift of untold magic, and a Changeling without a clue as to who she is are about to turn the supernatural world upside down. But as a new and terrible war is sparked between good and evil, and the losses become insurmountable, Selene and Avery are going to learn that no matter who or what you are… you must be careful what you wish for.

The Seelie King (teaser)

“They told the tales sometimes at gatherings. The Tuath Stories remembered the fates of the Wishers well.
Thousands of years ago, the sovereigns of the Fae lands issued a decree: The Wishers would die.
The Wish Fae had managed to hide their powers for eons. But all secrets were eventually told, and it was so for this one as well. When the sovereigns were made aware of the abilities of the Wishers, they grew frightened.
Powerful magicks were called forth, and in an act never before or since accomplished, both light and dark, both Seelie and Unseelie gathered together in their courts and combined their powers.
The Wishers were annihilated.
However… speculation caused rumors, which spread in whispers and eventually became legends that told how the strongest and most fortunate few managed to escape and hide themselves amongst humans in the mortal realm.
But thousands of years passed with no sign of these legendary Wishers.
In time, the sovereigns who had issued their massacre were overthrown. Under new rule, the truth of this terrible tragedy was well taught and lamented. The fae kingdoms had destroyed something precious.
The Wishers were declared extinct. And in its rareness, in its extinctness, the lost, most powerful class of the fae, in fact became sacred.”

Post Mardi Gras

Now that Mardi Gras has officially come to an end, I just have one small request. Whatever you do, please don’t give up reading for Lent. :)
Having gone through a few Lents as an author, I can tell you that some people claim they spend too much money on books, but then when they deny themselves these books, they spend their money on something more frivolous. And are still left unsatisfied.

People, reading is GOOD for you. Giving it up would be like giving up broccoli. Chocolate flavored broccoli!
Reading uses more of your brain than any other stationary function, (math uses the least, FYI), it strengthens neurons, and believe it or not, it burns calories. It is both food AND exercise for your brain. Not only that, but if you give it up, you will be hurting the authors who depend upon you to make a living. And you’ll probably just fill your extra time with TV or video games or eating, which makes you a worse person, not a better one, and betrays the entire purpose of giving something up for forty days.

On that note… I honestly believe people focus on the “vice” thing way too much. Life is hard. Sometimes life is really, really hard. Many individuals literally have Lent every day, and not by choice. It’s a struggle to get from one morning to the next. Giving up something that gets us through these moments may not be an option. So why not take another route this time? Why not take this as an opportunity to make the world a better place? Why not?

Give up being stingy with donations, give up yelling at your loved ones, give up honking your horn at the car in front of you (you know nothing about what is going on in their lives; what if they’ve just lost someone they love?), give up talking on your phone or texting while driving (for the love of God and all creation), give up smoking in someone’s walking path, give up forcing your employees to work unexpected hours or cutting their wages. Give up evil. Give up unkindness. Give up wrong. There’s no better time than the present to turn this from something selfish or pointless into something that’s actually worth a damn.

Just an author’s plea. 🙂 xoxo

Teaser (The Kings)

Avery knew what protocol demanded. He knew that sacrificing a sliver of his identity had made him weaker, and he knew that he should be resting. It took a lot out of a fae sovereign to create a knight.

He was fully aware.

But he was much more aware of Selene…. He’d seen her through the knight’s eyes, standing tall and solitary, long bare legs exposed to the world, fine, shimmering hair brushing her cheeks in the softest breezes, unshed tears somewhere behind those unforgettable, ice blue eyes. He’d felt her aura through his knight’s perceptions, her depth and warmth and uncommon understanding of the world around her, her anger and indignation at the injustices in the mortal realm – her fire.

That had seared right through him with an intensity that literally took his breath away. He’d placed his hand to his heart as if he could quell her flames with his touch – anything to keep her from burning him alive in the magnificent inferno that was her spirit.

He’d been instantly hit with his own desire like a sledgehammer to his senses. Knocked defenseless. Just for a moment.

And then he was mobile.

There were ten thousand things wrong with the universe just then. There were always ten thousand things wrong with the universe. But in his own little world, in his own tiny existence, some of those things posed a direct threat to what little happiness he could glean from his immortal life.

He’d waited too long for this. He had been a solitary king for thousands of years. And the one woman who could bring that lonesome reign to an end was standing beside the river Thames, alone and innocent, unshielded, unprotected – vulnerable. In that moment, it would not have mattered whether he’d given his knight a sliver of his soul or the better portion of it. Nothing in the multiverse could have kept him from racing to her side.

The Hottest Vampire Romance Ever Written

Releasing NOW – November 1, 2013

The Third Kiss: Dorian’s Dream

Third time’s the charm.

In the steamy aftermath of a Baton Rouge day, in the depths of a king’s luxurious mansion, a man with blue eyes dreams of a woman….

Emma Rose Nekoda is a girl with a painful past who relies on the love of her last living relative, her brother, and the joy of her work as a photographer to get her from day to day. But her memories have scarred her deeper than she admits, and her past is more dangerous than she knows. As she travels to the mist-filled streets of New Orleans for the opening of her first gallery showing, she is completely unaware that she has been ear marked for something greater – and more terrifying – than most people could have imagined.

Dorian Adalard has lived several lifetimes, but the moment the woman appears in his dreams will forever be marked in his memory. The faint sadness in her beautiful smile haunts Dorian’s night and follows him into the daylight, chasing his heels like a beast, no matter how hard he pushes his bike, no matter how many laws he breaks on his way from Baton Rouge to New Orleans.

It only gets worse when later that day, he looks up to find his dream girl watching him from the sidewalk of a busy New Orleans street. A nymph in blue jeans with wild hair and big eyes, she fills Dorian with an inexplicable and unshakable desire – to protect… and to devour.

And he knows who she is. For she is unique; there has never been another born like her. But she is not meant for him. She is the foretold queen meant for his brother – the beautiful, sadistic, and all too powerful vampire king.

Forever a changed man, Dorian finds himself breaking tradition, bucking vampire law, and going up against a veritable army and its ruthless master to save the woman he loves from the man he loathes – taking Emma along for the pulse-pounding, life-altering ride.

This new open-ended vampire romance series by New York Times best selling romance author, Heather Killough-Walden is unlike any published before. Delve into the supernatural darkness of a Louisiana night, and learn that for a Harley-riding vampire with eyes like ice and blood like fire, there is nothing quite so alluring as the woman your brother wants.

This is the hottest vampire romance you will ever read – and read again.
